It's very obviously a retcon, and it actually makes Viv look more racist than before by having a mixed black man being owned by a Jewish coded woman. Louisianan Voodoo is largely practiced by white people these days, by the way. Unlike Haitian or West African strains, Louisianan Voodoo has ALWAYS had white practitioners.
