That's not the redemption though, that's remorse and her surrender. No one thought her redeemed and we clearly see that in the second movie. Even the Rainbooms, who were giving her a chance because of Twilight, had doubts all the way up until the end when she steps in to save them. It was the Rainbooms' doubts that kept them from defeating the Dazzlings. They had not truly accepted Sunset as their friend, which kept them from fully utilizing the power of friendship. She had to go through everything in the movie to get their and they had to see her stand back up and redeem herself instead of simply ask to be forgiven and sit on the sidelines. Once she stepped up and they actually accepted her they were finally able to shoot the rainbow friendship lazer together.
