Very subjective. I for one thoroughly enjoyed both Teen Gohan's short highschool run in the Manga and Gotenks' fight against Super Buu. It matters not that he beat him, his fight was one of the most entertaining in the franchise. It's very clear Toriyama enjoyed Gotenks too.
Goku was allowed to surpass Bardock, Roshi, Korin, Kami, and King Kai. A huge part of early Dragon Ball was about the new generation surpassing the old generation.
