Becuase were getting into my own crackpot hoohah ideas and experiments , but theres a possibility you went through a "mental molt". Im not exactly sure what happens, because molting is rare, but if one portion of your layered consciousness outgrows its "shell" (outer layers of your spiritual and physical form), then that shell breaks open from the force of the growing layer. Mind, spirit, soul, body, and other layers which make up a human.
The experience is marked by, or caused by (chicken or the egg question ive found) intense emotional and mental pain. The self naturally does not want to revert, because that would mean experiencing the pain all over again.
