Akira and Ito said throughout the years that SH3 was originally going to be another standalone game just like SH2 before Konami told Team Silent to change it to SH1 sequel because Japanese fans hated SH2 and wanted a proper sequel to SH1. Akira and Ito also stated that the game had the darkest story that they could've come up with, with a lot of scenes that probably could not be shown even in a full mature-rated video game. Team Silent hated Konami for forcing them to change their original vision and they wanted to reuse it in SH5 before the game got canceled in 2006 after Konami disbanded Team Silent and handed the franchise to outsourced western devs
