Rie Tsukihiji, a pioneer in the world of women's sumo, passed away on July 23rd 2024 at the young age of 46. She was an active figure in women's sumo from the early days of the sport, when it was still called "new sumo." She was a legend, having won 11 consecutive open-weight championships starting from the first All Japan Championship in 1996.

She is 159 cm tall and weighs 150 kg. She started sumo late, after entering Takudai University, but her powerful style of wrestling made her a star on the world stage. She won a gold medal at the World Women's Sumo Championship.
