Rie Tsukihiji, a pioneer in the world of women's sumo, passed away on July 23rd 2024 at the young age of 46. She was an active figure in women's sumo from the early days of the sport, when it was still called "new sumo." She was a legend, having won 11 consecutive open-weight championships starting from the first All Japan Championship in 1996.

She is 159 cm tall and weighs 150 kg. She started sumo late, after entering Takudai University, but her powerful style of wrestling made her a star on the world stage. She won a gold medal at the World Women's Sumo Championship.

"World sumo" is merely an amateur contest. Japanese sumo is the only professional sumo, aka the only real sumo. And in professional sumo, women aren't allowed.

Side note, the qt on the right is also a women's sumo champion. She married a former sumo wrestler turned sumo elder and helps run the stable.

Modern ozumo is relatively new, and has no right to claim the title of "the only real sumo". There are local forms of sumo in rural parts of Japan that have existed in an unbroken tradition for centuries longer than ozumo, which ultimately has its roots in the sumo patronised by rich and influential nobility. In its current incarnation, the ozumo administered by the JSA is effectively just the last man standing, after the failure and incorporation of other sumo federations. It is not the only sumo or the true sumo, it is just currently the largest and most lucrative form of sumo. Amateur sumo, including onnazumo, is not new or inferior, simply less well-known and popular, and no sumo fan can rightly claim that popularity is what determines the merit of a sport, given that sumo is an incredibly niche interest outside of Japan, and far less popular than sports like baseball within Japan.

While pro sumo is less popular than mainstream sports, it's still many magnitudes more popular than amateur sumo. Rikishi get big endorsements, sponsorships, and commercials. Amateurs don't get shit and women even less so.
