Li Dunggou and Sun Kewang, the friendly rebel guys, are also real people. Li Dunggou especially went on to be a pretty badass general for the Ming after the rebellion collapsed and repelled the Manchus a couple of times before being forced into Burma/Myanmar where they were finally cornered and the last Ming emperor was captured and executed. Li died of despair after that.
