Borderlands does a lot of really shitty referential humor. For example when Leon says "hasta luego," it's because he's in Spain. In the OG he doesn't know how to speak Spanish but everyone knows "see you later." He's saying it to mock Mendez before he blows him up. Here's Borderlands's idea of a joke. A ghost sitting by a bonfire. The joke is Dark Souls. That's it. There's a mission where Handsome Jack tells you to go kill yourself. Mind you this happens AFTER you allegedly killed his daughter and he's blinded by spiteful rage towards you. So already the tone is fucked up. But the joke is just that you can't die. Because he hasn't turned off your immortality. The only thing this shitty joke does is bring up even more questions. Such as why the fuck hasn't Handsome Jack turned off your immortality?
This isn't me calling RE4 super deep and well written. What I am saying is that Borderlands is impressively incompetent.
