Guns work fine underwater, as long as they don't have a recoil system that can be interfered with by the water. The bullets just have to be more like darts than regular bullets so they can travel underwater. Pic related, the APS underwater assault rifle, the wet dream of frogmen everywhere.

You actually do have guns. You have a gravity gun type thing that you can shoot gastropod acid at enemies with, or even just blast them away if you want to be nonlethal. You also have a stasis gun that locks them in place.
Basically, using a purpose built gun on hostile wildlife is too bad and evil. But using a portable stasis field to freeze the hostile wildlife while you slowly carve them to death with a knife? That's just peachy! So is melting them with locally sourced acidic toxins. Both of those are way less violent than a gun right?
