The gap is that you have to play against aggro like it's a combo deck because if you don't you die, except unlike a combo deck it's 40 playables 20 lands so they rebound from it very fast. Some cards, like HH, are also not effectively answered by removal because they're 1-drops with a burn death trigger, meaning that the moment it resolves you have already lost tempo regardless of what happens next. The decks don't run out of gas like they used to either because of cards like EC providing them with card advantage, or colorfixing being so easy now that they can just splash draw colors (like Prowess, since that draw still contributes to their gameplan).
