The more I think about it... The more it seems like Premodern is the way to go. Even the power level difference between the """top""" decks and the weaker viable decks running the best options for their playstyle is fairly small. It's not like any standard after 2003 when it's 80% affinity and then 30% some best deck everyone has to build around or lose. It's not like Legacy or Modern where the power level of the cards has been continually crept up by the incredibly bad post-2003 design.

There are an absolute ton of FF cards that are unplayable because they're just borderline when more efficient options exist in standard already thanks to the 4000 card pool.
Yuna is firmly in that category. She has ward which is decent, but still killable, and only works on your end of turn so it would be restricted to instant speed combos when other omni decks can operate at their main phase at 3-4 mana

In older standard formats you'd have a single 2/2 haste for 2 like Robber of the Rich as the most aggressive card available to red, no higher damage output possible. Now there are about 10 substitutes all more aggressive than robber with more damage output. Now a 2/2 hate for 2 is a draft chaff common.

Even if you banned heartfire, cutter AND monstrous rage, red would still have swiftspear, emberheart, nemesis, lightshatter, hired claw, manifold, burst lightning, etc etc. They'd just replace cards as needed and still be the #1-10 decks in standard

Red is to fast for this. You'd really want a one cost removal that doesn't charge you life or trigger mice. Swords is great for this. Fatal Push would be better against everything not indestructible. Fatal Push only really sucks against hearthFIRE hero where you still could take a lot of damage. With dismember, you're still paying the same amount as if mice were buffed up to a 4/4 though it's 1 less damage than destroying a 5/4 mice would hit you for. It's close enough that they'll still kill you just as fast.

Back when it was released, it was maybe 2 cards in a deck and black would rely more on disfigure (useful still since creatures didn't stack a billion +1/+1 counters on turn 1) in the sideboard. Dismembering a goblin guide that went first and hit you for 2 on turn one would put you down to 14 life in response to which on turn 2 they would just put down another creature and force you to use another removal or get to attack again lowering your life total so that they could more easily just opportunistically burn you down when you tap out.

Previously, an aggro deck threatening a turn 3 kill only would happen on a god draw and usually was a sign of an all-in gameplan where stopping it would win you the game on the spot. Something like the most hyper aggressive decks in ZEN/SOM running Devastating Summons to blow up their own lands for immediate and low mana cost power on the board, or using 0 mana artifacts to sacrifice to Kuldotha Rebirth to get 3 1/1s for 2 cards and one red mana, and then with your remaining mana playing a kicked bushwhacker to give everything haste and +1/+0 for the turn to swing with everything immediately. A turn 1 Goblin Guide, turn 2 Kuldotha Rebirth, turn 3 Devastating Summons + kicked bushwhacker could potentially kill without interaction (2, 2, 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 4 + 4) but if the play failed the deck was left without lands and basically dead in the water. That’s a total of 4 cards not counting lands (summons, bushwhacker, 0 or 1 mana artifact, rebirth) and basically destroying yourself in the hopes you kill your opponent before that matters.

Meanwhile in your example you’re not even mentioning other broken aggro cards like Cori, Hired Claw, Emberheart Challenger, Monastery Swiftspear, Screaming Nemesis, Testa, or Swift-Shot Showoff. Or if your opponent has the audacity to actually try and play control you can fuck them over with stuff like Sunspine Lynx or Magebane Lizard.

The gap is that you have to play against aggro like it's a combo deck because if you don't you die, except unlike a combo deck it's 40 playables 20 lands so they rebound from it very fast. Some cards, like HH, are also not effectively answered by removal because they're 1-drops with a burn death trigger, meaning that the moment it resolves you have already lost tempo regardless of what happens next. The decks don't run out of gas like they used to either because of cards like EC providing them with card advantage, or colorfixing being so easy now that they can just splash draw colors (like Prowess, since that draw still contributes to their gameplan).

Eldraine 1.0 is when {design} started to get bad, but {balance} was still workable, not great, but not retarded. Cards got stupidly complex, too many modes, too much text, cards were self-enabling combos. The thematics of high fantasy were thrown out the window and we got fucking shrek. There's nothing in Eldraine comparable to the total catastrophe of balance we see in standard right now. They weren't whoring out the game with a dozen sets, supplemental products, collector boosters, serialized cards, universes beyond, etc etc. That all came later.

There are various other watersheds in magic's history
Planeswalkers being added and the direction of the post-time spiral game
Mythics and the overt monetization and exploitation
Marvel superfriends plotlines trying to push nu-walkers
and we're in one right now with the Lord of the Rings / Final Fantasy UB era

Oko is deceptively good, he's banned in legacy for a reason. Against aggro, make a food pass is pretty strong. It threatens an endless stream of 3/3s, life gain, or just taking their guy/cutter. If dealt with immediately he still gained you 9+ life. Aggro was basically unplayable before he got banned.
I don't think he'd be oppressive or even the best deck, but he'd definitely be playable.

Aggro was unplayable against oko because the threats were cards like bonecrusher giant, lovestruck beast, etc. Big dumb creatures with no abilities, 3+ mana cost, no haste.

Oko was ""oppressive"" in a format one step removed from Baneslayer Angel being meta. Wicked wolf, murderous rider, rotting reggie, anything with cavelier in the name, lmao.
Oko today would do literally nothing. No decks are playing creatures big enough to turn into an elk or take two turns to steal. 5 mana to gain 3 life won't stabilize you against aggro. Making a single 3/3 blocker won't do anything.
He's useless against swarms of prowess monks & mice
He's useless against burn damage and slickshots in the air
He's useless against omni combos
He's useless against control in general

The top two decks in the last mtgo event were UW omni and gruul leyline of resonance, in both cases if you tap out for oko you lose the game.

History lesson

The biggest reason people hated oko when you played against him is how stupidly hard he was to remove. He would keep neutralizing creatures and shutting down the opponent's board or churning out more (slow) threats, and decks really lacked ways to kill him. Even if he was in standard he would be hard to kill, 6 loyalty is gigantic
The reason he'd still be trash in right now is that you don't need to remove him
Every deck wins the game with tools that oko can't interact with. He can't do shit against haste flying creatures, mass tokens, combos, etc etc. Oko can come down and +2 and make a food and so what? Opponent will just totally ignore that oko exists. He could make a 3/3 creature the next turn and good job you've effectively played a 3/3 for 3 that can't block its first turn. I mean fucking hell you can't block aggro with fog bank or glissa or 0/8 for 2 what do you think an elk can do

If you're trying to win the game with a bonecrusher giant and lovestruck beast sure oko gums up the board and doesn't die. Is it autistic to bring food to share for FNM? LGS does open tables and a group of 4 or 5 of us play together, while the rest of the people in there usually play commander. At the end of the night I go around and offer the leftovers to the other tables. I've never had to take any home, so people seem to like them well enough.

I've been trying to bake but I don't want to have 2 dozen cookies for just myself so that's how I get rid of them. The last two weeks it's been cookies and magic bars.

I think you are underestimating how good Oko is at stabilizing games.
It's not just +2 make food. It's +2 make a food, then swap the food for your threat or change it for a blocker, in a usually Bant midrange shell that is designed to handle threats that Oko can't.

Oko is a threat in and of itself, and a game-ending threat too. No other planeswalker stabilizes games as strongly and as unbreakably as him. He is life gain and removal, he turns all your tokens into threats. The guy just kicks dick and doesn't apologize.

You run him alongside things that solve problems he can't. He solves all the other problems, and wins the game on top of it.

The legacy playgroup at my LGS is tightly knit and I bring along some baking for the end of year gameday which is always followed by cube, but not for every normal event we play.
