they are just very experimental games, the developers had the parts but they didn't yet knew how to make them work, progression is kinda akward in both games(in 1 the major wants you to arbitraly tilt half of the dungeons fields for no reason, in two half of the game is gated off till you hit the second generation)
content for the girls in RF1 was also almost nonexistant exept for their relationship level dependent quips and their unique marriage requirements, 2 at least introduced an actual quest system that fleshed those characters out

also no multistacking when picking up items, making harvesting a hazzle
