It's neither. The Old has a vague beginning, wherein we don't know how long it was between the Sentients being sent to Tau and them coming back to kill all organic life. Not only that, but between Hunhow going and coming back from Tau, the Zariman-Ten0 incident happens, and the ship is lost and doesn't show up until after the War begins.
