End of the Year update is a big whispers in the wall style update with the past tau, protoframes, new operator systems, new frame, etc. It's not just a prologue quest like Lotus Eaters and it's not just the past sections of Tau. And yes, that is our own timeline of Tau, it seems the Orokin written lore is being treated as unreliable.

In 2026 we will get the new war style quest where we actually go to Tau and fight a bunch of sentients and shit.

No. There were no Solar Rails to Tau. No Void Jump. They made the Sentients exactly because of that - the journey would be perilous and the ability to adapt to anything was needed.
Sentients were however made to be purposefully vulnerable to the Void (theorized by some anons that they are super sensitive and conductive to it, like short-circuiting as we make Amps out of them). They would terraform Tau and in the off-chance they developed sentienCE they'd be stranded and could be easily killed off some people theorizing the Solar Rails and Void Jump of subsequent ships would wash them all dead.
The Sentients became Sentient and realized the Orokin would take over Tau and lay waste to it. They took the short way back via the Void, likely by a Solar Rail they should have developed. But THIS is what sterilized them. Pazuul mentions it was akin to ''scalding Hunhow's womb''
Orokin had a bunch of high tech weapons, but Sentients were technology itself and could subvert it as well as turn it off. The war was lopsided and they needed to use simpler meant to fight back
