Now that I think about it, it's weird that Heroes had this "power of friendship" theme when the actual story and conflict is just Metal Sonic seething about Sonic and playing everyone just so that he can get powered up for this showdown with Sonic. Like there's not even an attempt to connect the two.

What I'm Made Of is from Sonic's perspective. It's a repudiation of Metal Sonic's claim that he has surpassed/ become Sonic. The entire ethos of the song is "I'm gonna show you what it means to be Sonic.".

Tbh it's my favorite vocal track in the franchise.
