i don't know shit with any certitude of course
the fission device would have only been a component of the wider equation though
there would have been provisions to more conventionally clear out a vertical column of empty space in the core for the fission kerfuffle to erupt into. this might have been the purpose of any thermite present and could explain the preceding fuckery. i'm not sure.
