the assumption that good intentions will naturally produce good policy outcomes is one of the major flaws with Progressive politics. Quite often generous but naive intentions lead to bad outcomes. You can't be equally kind to everyone in a world where kindness to one person can result in harm to another. Kindness to illegal immigrants is cruelty to citizens (and for that matter to legal immigrants).
