The reason standard colour schemes are cool is because they're recognisable. You take to the field and see that you're facing an army of (whichever legion) and your brain can instantly flesh them out with details that aid your imagination and immersion. It works even if the army composition isn't typical of said legion; the exception proves the rule, etc. It's detrimental to immersion if someone tells you that their bright green army is actually iron warriors or blood angels. 30k is essentially a historical game. I like the analogy that 30k is a car show, not a race. The aesthetic IS the game.
Unrelated but I'm sperging out slightly because I don't know all the info from the new libers and it means I can't properly build a force yet. Once they're out I'll be back to building (and endlessly refining). At the moment I'm slightly hyped but mostly uncomfortable
