colleges give you the excess funds from the cost of attendance minus the tuition that you use to buy your textbooks, pay for your off campus room + board, personal expenses, and transportation.

a typical CC will have a cost of attendance for the semester like this:

>tuition 2000
>room 4000
>board 2600
>textbooks 600
>personal 1650
>transportation 1500
>total = 12,350/semester

states and community colleges all have programs to make tuition essentially free, so the subsidized loans will go into your bank account for room + board + lifestyle expenses - these are expenses that you are minimizing because you are living at home

if you want access to credit on top of that, you can take out an additional 6-10k per semester in unsubsidized loans (these loans accrue 6.5% interest)
