Why didn't he just help Clark from the start? He wasn't outright a villain so he didn't actually want to hurt him, and Clark has built up a reputation of being a trustworthy guy. It took Lex killing some random dude for him to turn on him? Had he just helped Clark earlier they both would have gotten out of that situation much earlier and much easier
