I agree with the broad strokes of your post, however I want to offer a somewhat esoteric counterpoint.
Even if the original remains accessible, a remake or remaster can dramatically dilute the discourse around a game. Take games like Shadow of the Colossus, SH2, Demon’s Souls or RE4. They used to inspire really good threads, with deep discussions about their design, theorycrafting and often great memes. But once the remake drops it turns into endless sperging. The center of gravity shifts from appreciating the original to shitting on the reinterpretation.
