It's actually hilarious that Goku's sacrifice being pointless in the sense that it failed at killing Cell would just feel bad if Salagir wrote it, as Salagir makes "pointless" sacrifices frustrating because he uses it as a chance to make their pets shine. Goku's sacrifice works because on top of the attempt at saving everyone, he got to convince Gohan to fight back, and decided to remain dead on his own terms (Even if his reasoning is bullshit).

Toriyama makes possibly frustrating moments work by having a reason for them to happen that way. Salagir makes frustrating moments even more frustrating to be unpredictable and make his pets shine.
