No. He had a lot of potential but I feel like he shouldn't have been directly involved in the Mari stuff or stabbed Sunny in the eye at the end. What is weird is that they set up a potential mirror to Sunny's grief with the implied (but strangely not confirmed outright) death of Basil's grandma so the psychotic angst didn't really have to be there for the plot to resolve.
