I just finished playing this for the first time after a botched playthrough attempt years ago. I liked it a lot even if I really hated some stuff about it.

It was mostly great.
One of my negatives is more of a tilted positive. The dream world RPG stuff was so nice that I got invested in it to the point where I feel like I almost would have liked it better as a whimsical Earthbound inspired RPG played straight.
My real gripe though is the whole twist with Sunny accidentally killing Mari and Basil helping him cover it up. It made me not really care whether either of them got a happy ending, soured the sweet stuff about Sunny missing his sister and I really liked how the game felt like it tackled the different effects a suicide can have on a friend/family group up to that point. Plus the way it played out just felt pretty hard to buy and silly. If two little boys accidentally pushed someone they cared about down the stairs they would just say she tripped instead of dragging her outside and faking her suicide. It soured the last couple of hours of the game for me hard.

Nah Batter's strong, he has Star-level attack potency and durability (compared to mountain level from Omori) from scaling to the Queen and his add-ons are more powerful than Omori's equivalents like his friends or the red hands.
I think Omori's primary edge in this fight are his hax but I don't think it's enough to make up for the stats gap since the main Omori win condition is pretty weak in my opinion; people arguing he wins will say that Batter would get BETRAYED and TRAPPED in Black Space for millenia I guess not realizing that major plot point in the game is that Black Space is an imperfect containment that Omori does not have full control over and hence it and its inhabitants regularly leak into the rest of the world. And keep in mind most of that is just the sort of mindless creature or something variant that wanders out on accident more than anything, for an entity like The Batter he would have no problem getting out and continuing the fight like nothing happened.
Also Omori's emotion manipulation would not work on Batter which really says all you need to know since anyone who has played Omori knows that not having an emotional advantage is a losing stance

The twist is something I can understand not liking, even if I didn't mind. It's probably because Omori had its hooks deep in me by that point, but I never questioned the logistics of what happened when I first played it and let the tragedy wash over me. I thought about it more over the weeks and months and years, and never really changed my initial opinion on it asides from the new information I learned. At this point, the one spot I feel is particularly spotty is why Basil thought to frame it as a suicide. That's still such an extreme action for a 12 year old to think of. That could have used some development. That character in general could have used some more everything. I don't know whether keeping the unused truth album text would have helped or hurt the truth.
And Headspace is one of those things I never really appreciated until subsequent playthrough's. I very much fell victim to the idea of "once you realize what the real story is, Headspace feels like a chore/distraction from what matters" and didn't appreciate Headspace in general. Headspace is a lot nicer when you stop to smell the roses. Humphrey's segment is a lot better than I remember, even if I see why I disliked it initially. Humphrey's a fun character. He does a good job of being fun and sinister, then terrifying when he goes off the rails. Also the music is great as usual.

Yeah, I didn't mention it in my complaints post but Basil in general is another issue I had with the game. I was on board when it felt like his problem was being forgotten and abandoned but him being central to the finale despite barely doing anything other than whining, faking a suicide for no apparent reason in a flashback and poking Sunny's fucking eye out made me really not give a shit about him.
Prior to the twist I was hoping the finale would be Sunny letting go of his grief in order to better help Basil with his (through some symbolic Headspace stuff of course) but the grandma stuff was just a springboard for the edgy things that I hated.

The way they balanced the two sides of the game was pretty interesting and I appreciate how they didn't feel the need to cut back on either setting too much but I feel like it probably divided a lot of people who liked one side better than the other.

If that was the case for Basil, I wish it was more strongly implied. A boy with abandonment issues, his parents are never there, his closet family is his grandma who's reaching the end of her life, wishes he had a sibling, seemingly has trouble fitting in just like Aubrey did, values his friends that much, the pieces are there. It just requires a bit of heavy lifting from the player to reach that conclusion.

Maybe I missed some dialog or something but the only hints I saw that Mari could be a bit explosive or a perfectionist was that note that said she freaked out on Kel for spilling some juice on the carpet and when someone (Hero?) said something about her quitting music for a while because she didn't think she was good enough at it. We could have used a little more to explain how that led to a full on manslaughter.

Practice for the duet is a bit iffy. There's a few lines in Black Space 2, maybe some of the finger imagery, and the unused truth album text, which say that violin practice was hell on Sunny's fingers. Making them hurt and bruise. And if you're willing to use unused text, than the unused Arachnophobia dialogue could imply that the pain even made Sunny cry it was so bad.
The way I see it, it went like this. Be forewarned that this is basically headcanon territory. Sunny and Mari would practice for long periods of time. All Mari had to do was sit down on her bench and press some keys, use her feet to step on the pedals. Sunny had to stand up straight, hold the violin up to his neck, hold it and his arms in that pose, and practice for however long Mari wants them to. His legs get tired, he gets tired holding that stance, his fingers hurt, and the longer they practice the worse it gets. He keeps making mistakes which disappoint Mari, and the pain causes him to make more mistakes. He's never good enough. This continues for the duration of recital practice. Rather than blame Mari, he blamed the violin. The violin is what's hurting him. Finally he can't take it anymore, and breaks the violin. Then the truth album plays out, or maybe the unused text if you want to use that.
As for how aware Mari was of the pain it was causing Sunny, that's also up in the air. She might have known what was happening and told herself it would all be worth it in the end, or maybe she was completely unaware of what Sunny was going through and told herself whatever she wanted to believe about his lackluster performance. The unused Arachnophobia dialogue implies she might have known, but that dialogue is unused for a reason. Kind of like the truth album text.

These two rooms feel like pieces of Otherworld that just fell into Black Space. Meta-wise, I wonder if these are just rooms for Otherworld's Junkyard that went unused and someone had the idea to put these down here after some sprucing up to fit the new location. Good ol' fashioned recycling.

Mari appears here once the segment's over. She doesn't move or say anything, but at least Omori got his sister back. Her bed might be packed away, but they can share for now.
Also I finally put the Console Content mod in here, and it's after I'm done with Hikikomori so all I'm using it for are these borders. Why didn't I do this sooner? Maybe I'll at least go back and do the Basil Boss Rush in the future.

It's probably reading too deep into it because becoming toast might just be for the pun, not to mention there's lots of actual dead skeletons of Omori's friends across Headspace, but the idea of becoming toast being a kiddy way of Sunny trying to repress and wash over the idea of his loved ones dying by having them become toast instead is pretty sad. After what happened that night. Even if this is wrong, I still think something like that is being applied to this room specifically because of who and what the toast turns into.

I personally like to think picrel is one of the things Mari said the night she died. Maybe even one of the last things she said after getting in Sunny's way. Referring to the broken violin. With how oppressive this room is, especially after the toast start to change into Mari and then into these things, it feels like something that would be echoing in Sunny's nightmare. Twisted version of Mari telling him to look at what he did, but referring to her. Look at what he did to her.

Oh shoot, I completely forgot about this! Now I'm really glad I last minute put the Console Content in here. Because I get to ramble about this bit of trivia.
So. As we all know, the console release of Omori added in some new features like the Basil Boss Rush and Bossman Hero. But there's also a lesser talked about Black Space Photo Search™. When wandering around Black Space 2 areas you'll occasionally be stopped by the sound of Basil's camera snapping a photo and see one like this. There's a small bit of payoff to it involving the room with Sunny laying in bed with that twisted Mari above him you can find inside one of the Omori head's at the Black Space 2 playground.
What's interesting is that this idea seems like it previously existed as unused content, leftover code in the base game and functioning in the 2019 build. In random places across Black Space 2, walking in certain spots will cause a camera flash sound to play. It doesn't show a photo and nothing happens, but if you go to the above mentioned Sunny laying in bed room, you can find a photo is added to the room with each camera flash. They don't show anything, but give flavor text saying "It's a picture of you."
Isn't that interesting information that'll benefit you in day to day life?

Anyways, I stumbled on that when I was trying to find this. In the red maze, there's this part where the maze itself looks like it's forming letters. Specifically, it looks like the words KILL ME. I don't think I need to ramble about why some dark corner of Sunny's mind would have this in it.
But there's also another place that has that message in it, but infinitely less visible. In the "Meat" Black Space room, the one that has all the faceless friends running around, the walkable floor also spells out KILL ME. You're really only going to see that in a map viewer of some kind when the background isn't displayed.

It just adds a few extra bits to the Hikikomori route. It doesn't add enough to ruin anything. The real problem is what I just said. It doesn't add enough. The console content was pretty disappointing. It really didn't help that the assets being leaked early had us all hyped up for what seemed like an update that would add a playable Basil and seemingly more Headspace content, when in reality it was rather small in scale.

I won't dedicate a screenshot to it, but I'm still going to talk about the Mewo room of Black Space.
At it's core, the room is trying to put you in an horrible, inescapable solution, where the solution is to commit suicide. Kill yourself before you hurt someone else, like Mewo. It's a bit of psychological horror, but for Sunny I think this room is what he believes he should have done. Before he broke the violin, before he killed Mari, he should have just killed himself instead of doing any of those things. Things would have been better that way.
Also, if you cut open Mewo here, she disappears from White Space forever.

Fun bit of info I found out a few days ago while searching outside the game.
There's an unused Black Space 2 room called Other Othermart that would apparently have been accessed through a now dummied out door in the Weathervane Island room. It's a version of Othermart with a slightly different layout, and that's all there is too it. I wish they kept this location in as is, even if the design's probably a relic of an older version of Othermart. I feel like it would have been interesting to find this very real world location here in Black Space almost untouched, but not quite.

I wanted to test it for myself just so I could see it in-game, and I managed to get the door to Other-Othermart to appear using the debug menu. You just have to switch Variable 1053 to 2, turn the Weathervane to East, and the door appears.
Also apparently the Console Edition Borders that change depending on which location you're at think this is room is actually Faraway. The borders changed from the Black Space borders to Faraway Night's borders.

the reason nobody empathises with mari is because the game doesn't either.

the game completely ignores her perspective. the game barely treats her as a three-dimensional character - her personality is "caretaker" and "plays the piano". her being a perfectionist is barely in the text, aside from a few throwaway lines that first time players are likely not going to notice.

she's the woman in the refrigerator. a female character who exists to be killed off, and for that death to create a male characters dramatic backstory.

what's worse is, in a few moments the game even tries to make it look like mari feels sorry for sunny. even apologising to him - asking HIM for forgiveness. as if her actions made her deserve to be killed, or him killing her is in any way comparable to her scolding him for breaking his violin.

it's incredibly disappointing.
