Because it's software designed specifically for game audio sound design. Can you do most of the things FMOD does by writing tons of code yourself to handle all the complexities of mixing and effects and stuff. Probably, or you could use something like FMOD. It's hard to get across how powerful FMOD Studio (the good part of FMOD) is, if you haven't used it. I'll also say that it's not worth the trouble in my experience and I'd rather have shittier sound but at least with the guarantee that it works.

After FMOD, floating origin bugs were the most difficult to track down and fix because it can go wrong in very subtle ways or require a lot of extra engineering effort to handle some engine edge case which doesn't assume you move the entire world and level ever couple seconds.
