Not sure why the other guy is talking in my stead, but you pretty much nailed down why HC is so good. The combination of the spatial puzzle, research/planning battle and turn order that comes from it is very tense and subtle yet highly competitive. It's a bit obtuse to wrap your head around at first but it's truly a pretty genious design, too bad most people don't appreciate it.
