>basically the girls all run the same pace (dependant of their strategy). Wit makes them, then, run more intelligently depending on the situation, conserving energy, right?
here's a doc on basically all the mechanics of the game. ctrl+f "wit" and you'll know the game better than any shitposter here within minutes : https://docs.google.com/document/d/11X2P7pLuh-k9E7PhRiD20nDX22rNWtCpC1S4IMx_8pQ/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.psmvb6wqaxi2

The game has set positions your horses want to keep, and your uma constantly rolls for what their speed is, with Wit being the sole modifier for this. so it's more than just conserving energy, wit horses literally move faster, not at super speed but enough to be at the front of packs and not the back of packs (where you get boxed).

In JP, it was a well known strategy in the past (aka this game's future) to have your front runner gain a ton of wit, so they move faster and force everyone else to keep up with them, so everyone else is drained of stamina before the final spurt even begins. there's a section in the doc on "Seiun Bully" that covers this, Seiun Sky comes out in a month or two and she's going to be a menace if you don't have high Wit.

there's a dozen other things wit includes, like it does help conserve stamina, especially on downhills where it both reduces stamina loss and boosts your speed. it also reduces Kakiri/Rushed (which is a massive stamina loss), and it handles your chances of skills going off, it handles horizontal movement (aka the ability to get around people), and so much more.
