Ian ego couldn't take it. It was his big and bright idea and all the yes-men in design department glazed him for it. Then some dumb gamers are complaining about it and telling him what to do? Of course he's going to ignore it and carry on with original plan and only admit to being wrong 1,5 years down the line. Doing so at the start would shatter his ego and probably made him lose position among other devs.
