That's exactly what I did. Fucking all the doors were closed and I just followed the direct path to the main part where I saw lava and onto the boss. Everything was so dark in there and it was full of lava outside I just assumed it was some lore bullshittery abandoned mansion that doesn't matter and I didn't even know I COULD open the doors there.

Learning about all this shit afterwards made me so mad.
