Surely "subaltern" is the wrong word to use here. I guess it is technically applicable but given the ethnic connotations it has picked up, it has implications contrary to the actual context here. Simply calling Kuroki a "subordinate" would be be better when "subaltern" could also more generally refer to Aonuma. Then again,l that meaning would not be so present in the antiquated speech of the translation so it's probably fine.
