Yeah the IDW guy told me that's actually bullshit and if you read Sega's sekrit club files it actually makes perfect sense. That there's a lot of setting info that's directly followed by the game's scripts but simply not explained ingame - for example, the cartoon animal people actually do come from a different planet (not Mobius, but a different planet) and there's a portal between the two worlds. Sonic Heroes, Battle and other games with that aesthetic take place on Sonic & co's planet and games like Adventure 1 & 2 take place on Earth. This was trashed in favor of the new western team's "they come from an island" idea. There were also extensive illustrated files on what Blaze's world looks like.

I know it's hard to trust given no source and I don't want to name this person for obvious reasons but I completely believe it.
