Take Sonic's traits -> translate through a super feminine and rose-tinted girly lens = Amy Rose
Take Sonic's traits -> translate through a seductive catwoman lens -> change "I do what I think is right" to "I do what personally benefits me" = Rouge the Bat

Amy and Rouge are two different takes on what a Girl Sonic would be like. But Rouge is not MEANT to be "Girl Sonic" directly. Rouge is Nega-Knuckles, meaning she's the polar opposite of Knuckles much like Blaze or Sally are to Sonic. BUT, since Knuckles is Anti-Sonic, Rouge being Nega-Knuckles just loops it back around to being like Sonic.

A Girl Shadow is a Dark Girl Sonic, which doesn't describe Rouge even if she herself is dark aligned, because what makes her dark is that she's amoral and self-serving but in a way that emulates Sonic's carefree and charismatic attitude. What distinguishes Sonic from Shadow is a lack of that carefree charisma, as Shadow is defined by a strong sense of purpose and a willingness to pursue his goals by any means necessary. In a sense, Shadow is like Sonic stripped of his freedom as he's shackled by the past. If Sonic embodies chaos, then Shadow is the dark side of chaos: destruction. The "Chaos" that needs to be controlled, making him a living weapon of mass destruction that is used to destroy a specific target. Which, obviously, is nothing like Rouge. That's more similar to Surge, since she is a Dark (or Evil) Girl Sonic at her core, and her target being Sonic himself.

My headcanon for Sonic is that everything is just one big children's story which is progressively getting darker because the kid it's meant for is growing up and the story has to mature with him.

That there's a lot of setting info that's directly followed by the game's scripts but simply not explained ingame - for example, the cartoon animal people actually do come from a different planet (not Mobius, but a different planet) and there's a portal between the two worlds. Sonic Heroes, Battle and other games with that aesthetic take place on Sonic & co's planet and games like Adventure 1 & 2 take place on Earth. This was trashed in favor of the new western team's "they come from an island" idea. There were also extensive illustrated files on what Blaze's world looks like.
