There's a documentary from the GWOT called Shadow Company that talks about this. British-style organizations didn't go full Laurence of Arabia but they were more comfortable working within an Iraqi "system" and eating Iraqi food and so forth. The Brits and other foreign companies would read the street a bit better, while the American organizations were going around blasting Drowning Pool or Toby Keith or whatever.
