What about this idea to change the mark pact?
>Your back is a huge weakness, but only if you run away from battle, and it will stay that way for a week or until you regain your honor by defeating the guy that made you run away.

That way you are heavily incentiviced to stay your ground without stripping you of power and giving you a way to stop the curse.
