He wishes he could change unchangeable things like war or the tide but he lives in God's world and has to go by God's rules, accept his limitations and do his best within them. This is placed in opposition to Thorfinn believing that if you just try hard enough eventually you'll be able to stop the tide, if you just learn enough, and there's a message of hubris there if you look for it and hope for technological advancement to fix social problems if you look for that.
