Thanks for the advice. It seems like common sense, but I've been distracted with playing around with the editor to see what I can do instead of working with a plan to create a finished product. The doodads and ceiling tile tips have improved the visuals with very little effort on my part (imo).

I am currently using MZ, but I may go to MV since it seems like MV has a lot more free resources/graphics readily available, and my usual piracy site doesn't really have any of the paid stuff.
