Dunno if Shield is better or worse.
I just like the Shield. I like games that let me use a Shield and more specifically, use them as a weapon and gives me an active block at the same time.
Plus that Alt Attack is pretty incredible. I've saved a lot of people from being downed with that alone.

Plus - I feel like I can do more with shield. It feels more.... versatile? I don't know. But it feels nice having a block and more importantly, a block that can block ranged fire and heal toughness from it. Really nice.
