The Old Ones were probably the closest thing 40k had to a primordial ‘creator’ race alongside the C’tan and, depending on how you much want to buy into theories and vague lore bits, other stuff like warp entities that dwell in the ‘basement’ of the universe. We really don’t know much about them at all, not even what they really look like, but they’re traditionally thought of and portrayed some as some kind of reptilian race, which is a leftover trademark from their WHF counterparts, but it’s possible they were some kind of weird amalgamated mass of alien civilizations who were both really advanced and psychically potent and didn’t have one set appearance. At the very least, they were the top dogs of the Milky Way alongside the Necrontyr, but definitely the superior of the two until the C’tan came into the picture and helped them. We don’t know much about them, but what we do know paints a very clear picture of how formidable they were. Not only was their technology absurdly advanced, they were also the most potent psykers to date which was bad news for the Necrontyr who had little conception of the Warp at the time. We know they created the Webway, an absolutely massive sprawling sentient inter-dimensional labyrinth megastructure of sorts that can house entire solar systems within it with ease, including Commoragh, which itself is stupidly huge and home to billions/trillions of Drukhari. Also, the language they spoke was quite literally able to make reality itself their bitch.

Also they created a bunch of other minor races and even helped push along the evolution of humanity. Some people think they also created the Tyranids but that’s just a theory.

Been playing around with my own build I was playing Havoc and Auric on.
Also been looking at what other Arbite players have been using on Havoc and Auric.

Tried to make a... generalized sort of build combining all of them.
What do you think? Too much defense? I feel like I definitely don't have enough damage. I wanted Justified Measures and Monstrosity Hunter, but couldn't get them.

No point in taking the dog if you don't take at least some +% dog damage. You skipped the +50% in break the line. It's a single point for what should have 100% uptime when it actually matters.
Suppression force (staggered damage reduction) feels pointless to me, so you can easily move that point into dog damage.

Remote det is a DoT that can trigger puncture on each tick, which in turn puts max bleed stacks on the target.
Remote det staggers the target, meaning it can benefit from bolt pistol's execution blessing.
Send your dog into a pack, hold your boltgun, explode, and anything lighter than maulers just dies.
I believe the shield maul damage vs electrocuted and rending vs staggered blessings also work against armor if you swap to them after ticking up the bleed. Unsure and doubtful about the melee rending in the bottom right.

The -20% damage on staggered enemies is NOT worth the point. It's ONLY valuable on Monstrosities, and IF you hit their weakpoints over and over, and they already don't deal much damage, and if they are, then that just means you should really be blocking a lot more, plus True Grit should already cover any especially hurtful attacks anyway.
I think you'd really benefit from putting a point into a dog keystone, or at least the +50% from your ability. Maybe spending some points to get those extra crits or extra dodge could also be good

What you're saying is only partially true. For all of the cleave and damage the bottom right keystone gives, the left one lets me bash heretics to the ground approximately 33% more often, while giving humongous monstrosity damage, and wall hacks. It also gives a fuckload of dog damage. And if you aren't running break the line, the extra cooldown rate is arguably even more useful since the other abilities have much longer cooldowns.
I find the section of the tree between the blitzes and auras to be extremely underwhelming, and voltaic mandibles + canine morale are the only relevant dog talents, while simultaneously being the best ones in that section of the tree. Shout outs to the ammo node, and concussive though. Both of those are extremely good at what they do.
The amount of investment is ultimately minimal.

Bleed absolutely obliterates bosses, boltgun and bolt pistol are both extremely good weapons for different reasons. It's a cost, but the opportunity cost is honestly very, very cheap.

This is the biggest concern, it takes like a second or two of setup when the dog is off doing god knows what, that you sometimes can only barely afford. I've gotten used to it, it doesn't bother me anymore.

This is only relevant when you're pinned in some terrible position and need to keep meleeing or blocking, but chances are, you're using the dog explosion here to buy yourself some space, so you can immediately use that space to just hold your gun and passively kill everything around you.

Smite is powerful, and highly situational. You should use it mostly to protect someone doing an objective, or to stun massive hordes of armor spam when your retards don't have enough damage to kill them fast. Overusing it is not only bad etiquette because it's pretty unfun, but also bad because you could be doing much more damage with a staff.
Also use it with empowered psionics if you want it to deal any relevant amount of damage.

I like the versatility of dog. It can get dogs off me if I somehow fuck up. Stun bosses. Completely take out one enemy randomly. Will stun and knock back mutants or bursters. Having it near me gives me passive toughness regen. Shock will stun anything it attacks.

I like to play a melee centric build and have built myself to be very tanky. But I also like the shield which doesn't do the most damage to bosses or carapace on Havoc. It's not awful, just not the best. And from my testing, I haven't been able to find a gun that lets me make up for my lack of boss killing. This wasn't an issue on Ogryn because they had several options for this. Arbite doesn't, or at least, I haven't found one.

Having multiple tools to deal with issues is better.
I use the mk6 shield and run it alongside the mk8 arby shotgun and I use the dog with remote explosion.
The shield works well if you ever get caught with your pants down and you can use it to safely maneuver behind cover into safety. The mk8 shotgun works well as a sniper to take the said gunners out efficiently. And the dog can be used to take out gunners as well.

I'm thinking that I play Havoc and the game introduces scenarios that you haven't been in, therefore I see the value in ways you don't. For one, "gunner patrols" aren't really a thing. Instead you get massive waves of gunners. Sliding isn't a fix-it-all solution, there's a moment where you stand up and you can be shot for a split second, there's no toughness break grace period in Havoc, and in that split second you can suffer health damage if your toughness is down. If enemies are in your way you can't slide. The shield suppression lets you stun and suppress gunners and any enemies blocking your path, it lets you advance towards them and kill them one by one, without having to awkwardly slide around, because they are too busy recovering to shoot. This takes absolutely zero of your limited tools. You can use your ultimate, your blitz, your ammo, but all of these are limited and comparatively less versatile.
I do see how the shield is entirely overkill for anything not Havoc.

I still dont quite get what I should be doing with weapon upgrades. From what I understand from this thread, you start with a good baseline of 4 stats at 80% and one dump stat at 60%, then level up your mastery, and add your blessing. I think this is a good staff to start upgrading with, but I have no idea which blessings and perks to use with it, any ideas?
Is this staff even good? Its a lot of fun. It and the VoidStrike feel good to use, The electric staff didnt feel impactful (could be my level) and I ahvent unlocked the fire staff yet.

You got most of it right, but you can totally level with some random statted piece of shit, or something you bought from Melk, especially if you're running low on cash. Just be aware that upgrading a poorly statted weapon will obviously cost you twice if you want to have an actually good one later on.
Realistically, for most weapons, you just need a couple levels in it to unlock a worthwhile blessing to make that weapon good. It's actually kinda okay to level with just a blue lasgun that only has infernus, for example.

Voidblast is ground pound, right?
Rending shockwave lets you actually kill armored enemies good. Warp flurry is more raw DPS, blazing spirit with a proper crit build should work better when there's enough enemies to be relevant. If you do go burn, make sure you perk flak, and potentially crit. Otherwise flak and carapace might be worth considering.
I haven't used voidblast much in a while so take this with a grain of salt. Warp resistance is definitely the dump stat, since you really want all the other stats to be high.

Blocking is useless in this game for the most part. At the highest levels it's barely a thing unless you are being targeted by a monstrosity, like a chaos spawn doing that quick crawling attack.

This one of the reasons why nobody uses stuff like the Offensive Defence blessing. Yeah, it sounds good on paper but when you actually play with it you realize it is not worth using because the stacks don't build up fast enough to be useful.
You could make an argument for using Lightning Reflexes but that requires you to block at a perfect moment for kind of minimal benefit, tier 4 LR only gives you 25% strength for 3 seconds.

Force swords have the best blessing in the game (uncanny strike) and iirc also have pretty good crit blessings. The penis shaped one is a decent stand-in for the dueling sword, but the "meta" reason to use one is peril block.
The greatswords have two strengths. For one, if you build HEAVILY into exclusively being a melee psyker, they're about the best melee weapon you can have, but such builds are very hard to play and I wouldn't recommend it. For two, if you're building shock staff, or some weird gun psyker build, both of which likely have atrocious trash clear, the Mk VIII with wrath blessing singlehandedly carries it.
Also the moonlight beam is quite good against packs of ragers.

I've used it in both Auric Maelstroms and Havoc 40 to good success, so unless it's gotten nerfed in the last several months, it's only shit if you're shit. If you want more attack speed, run it with either a crit build and spam FOTF for basically permanent 20% attack speed or run it with Martyr.

Auric is the highest difficulty, it used to be a modifier but it's a distinct difficulty now.
Maelstrom missions are basically a mission that come with multiple additional modifiers attached to them like extra waves of certain kinds of enemies or huge chaff spawns
Havoc is kindof a mode where you work the havoc number up by doing mission after mission with increasingly harsh modifiers, 40 is the king shit number for this mode and implies the best of the best shit is needed.

Oh kek. It might not be performing well for you because of a lack of weapon stats and talents. There's a 10% attack speed node down towards the bottom of Zealot tree that you'll pretty much always run if that's what you meant by it being slow. When you get a full build you'll be able to get even more attack speed from either the Martyrdom keystone (not recommended if you're new) or the Blazing Piety keystone combined with the Invocation of Death talent that leads up to it making your Fury of the Faithful have a very short cooldown, thus enabling a high uptime of its 20% attack speed boost.

I think the only way I could really do that (unless 75% cleave is somehow not going to help compensate for increased hit mass in high havoc) would be to drop the Kruber chare modifiers and Arbites Vigilant, but 25% strength would give damage, stagger, and cleave, so I don't know if that would really be worth the mostly conditional damage nodes I could pick up. Honestly I don't really like any of the other ones I've got so far like the Combat axe. The Infantry Autogun is okay, though. I keep seeing people with Eviscerators and Bolters and I was hoping to get those sooner, rather than later.

Locational damage is real but different enemies have different armor on different parts of their body, and your weapon has different damage values for different armor types, and then you have light and heavy combo patterns, some swings do better for wahcking heads because swing arcs do matter its not a 0 range gun.
and then to top it off blessings nad perks sometimes really DO help a weapon come into its own, the classic example being brutal momentum on combat axes.

There's a reason why you can go to the psyker lady on the ship and go into the "meat grinder" which is basically a target dummy striking area to test your weapons on various enemies with their AI turned off, the game will also helpfully tell you what kind of armour you struck when your hacking up these puppets, part of the game knowledge here is learning what special enemies have problematic armour, like how the maulers, traitor guard dudes with the two handed chainaxes, happen to have a carapace helmet on but are otherwise wearing flak so if your weapon can't handle carapace you probably shouldn't be headshotting them.
