Also the show just completely forgets to show why specifically they would love each other. It's especially egregious with Shuji because he doesn't show any of his internal thoughts, what Machu means to him and how she makes him happy after how long he had been looping. He has to literally exposition dialogue to the audiencs that he loves her in the final minutes of the show.
Even Machu has no feelings towards him as a person for most of the show. He's just the vehicle for her dreams but nowhere did she even interact with him as a person. Hell the only scene we have of the two actually talking casually is just Machu being horny for his collarbones without noticing his fever.
There's just nothing to root for, nothing to bite into to drive a shipper's fantasy. It's just the show telling you the cute girl ans the cute boy get together. Even Gquax has more romance with her.
