My dad made a similar comment once and while I already stopped caring about what he thinks, it really is shocking to hear. It shows a blatant lack of self-awareness and an inability/unwillingness to understand who you are as a person, where your problems lie and everything you've worked to overcome. It's scary to imagine how much worse things would've been in that circumstance and it's a little like hearing "I wish you were dead," since in a sense they do.
