I actually got it reversed, my bad. When Mario Maker 2 first launched, it had an option to competitively play courses against randoms with a ranked system (Multiplayer VS.) but had no way of playing with friends at all. A lot of people complained about this and eventually a friend mode was added into an update half a year later.
The Switch Sports incident also added legacy Mii champions into the game 4 months after launch, so usually it takes Nintendo 4-6 months to course correct after they fuck up if they decide to listen to fans.
