The big monsters are endgame unlocks, they're not too difficult to get around level 40 like you are though. You're meant to get them later in the story, and they're great for a long time. In the postgame, you can dump them once you start raising mana benefit and start getting genesis stone skills though. Lots of monsters a hell of a lot more powerful than the dragon deep into the postgame. The dragon actually becomes a liability at times since some bosses counter physical attacks on specific turns, which hakika designed so that you can't just use the dragon on everything. This also means magic is really good in the postgame too, especially ice magic and other ice skills.
