ok, so I was a little mistaken. Remnants feed off other remnants, and passively absorb aura. But they do no cycle. Which is what I thought. So because they can't cycle, it takes an effort to keep remnants alive. They have to eat other remnants to avoid dispersing. Because remnants are made up of the very elements, if they use too much energy, they use themselves up.
But imagine having to go hunt for lessor remnants, in order to feed your beloved remnant, just to avoid them from dispersing, or further slipping into animalistic behavior.
