The original director is a flaming homo, and the movie has autobio elements. He probably looked like the protagonist as a kid. I mean, he kinda looks like him now. He's also the guy who made that movie about dead latinx grandma. It seems like the only thing the female directors did was saw off the edges of his story to make it more marketable and less depressing. Which I don't like, but it's funny to pretend a gay man wouldn't make a movie about a boy with mommy issues.
