You could have done a veteran Samus breakdown, even a Ridley one, but only if you engineer most the entire game toward building to that moment.
She faces setbacks and failures to achieve certain objectives
She has to progressively kill former good friends ala Prime 3
At some point she needs to choose to condemn a squad of good troopers or otherwise condemn a colony.
An entire onslaught of shit happening.
All the while you actually show Samus herself grinding and cracking under the pressure of what she has to endure
And then when she's at a low point, in a moment she didn't expect, there is Ridley, ready to mock her with everything.

It'd be a dark or depressing game, but that's the way you could have done it.
Certainly not by having the game feature a lot of bitching about what nickname they were using or how the troopers were nice but in the wrong way.
