I recently went through Yu Yu Hakusho and had a very good time. It has a lot of tropes and it's very juvenile sometimes, but it's quite charming. Not many animes manage to make people cry on the first episode.
The last arc kinda sucks, it's very rushed, but still worth a watch specially considering it's 110 episodes in total.

is the writing as woke as some people seem to claim? I'm interested in playing it, but I fear that if the writing isn't as good as in BG2 the comparisons will make me lose interest.

One of my favorites! DD2 ain't that bad, but it falls short on some stuff. If you see it as an open world beat'em'up with very good combat, you'll have some fun. Also worth to check out some mods specially to make the overworld more interesting and increasing the difficulty.
Also man, check out DDON. It's super fun even when playing solo.
