I feel like this really kicked off with BotW and has been the norm ever since
really hoping it doesn't harm Prime 4 too much, but I imagine it'll infect all their games in due time
I think part of the reason they've gone for this style is because the Switch is a semi-handheld, so they want people to be able to pick it up and have fun in short bursts (which is also why they reward you for doing basically anything, like korok seeds and moons) and a sandbox environment is naturally geared towards that
