It's simple.
This "person" is what you call an attention parasite. You want to know why people still bother talking to him? Because it's not exactly the same handful of people. Through the years, as the userbase of these threads rotate, there will always be someone new, who doesn't know who he is, who will react on instinct by what they think is just your run-of-the-mill forum trashtalk, and engage with him, naively thinking "oh, that's what the internet is for anyways".
These are fresh victims that don't know they are feeding the resident schizo who has been at this for years. Our parasite, of course, understands this: he knows there will always been someone on 4chan or Reddit who doesn't know the drill yet, and that he will always be able to get some form of attention if he keeps poking.
I haven't directly addressed the guy in years, but someone else always will.
If these threads are a house, he is part of the furniture. And when you have a strange-looking chair on your living room, new visitors are always gonna react to it.
