I mean thickline cartoons of the 2000’s are about as expressive as thickline cartoons of the 1990’s, they definitely give a lot of creative freedom to the artists unlike 90% of modern cartoons.
I guess this artstyle depends on how it’s executed, I love shows like Clone High, Billy & Mandy, and Dexter’s Lab with this artstyle, but then I look at Total Drama’s stiff and unexpressive artstyle and think "that’s certainly a shittier version of this style alright".
